New 2007 Federal Minimum Wage Mandates Employers To Post Updated Labor Law Posters Now!
The ongoing debate between the House and the Senate to raise the federal minimum wage is over. On May 25, 2007, Congress passed a bill to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour over the next two years. The new law raises the federal minimum wage to $5.85 an hour effective July 2007. It will go to $6.55 an hour one year later and to $7.25 an hour a year after that.
The phase-in period of the federal minimum wage increase also will affect many state minimum wage regulations. If a state raises its minimum wage to a rate higher than the federal minimum wage (as is the case in most states) employers are required to pay the higher rate.
As a result of the federal minimum wage increase, all employers must update their mandatory federal labor law postings and may be required to update their state labor law postings as well.
The 3 step wage increase is scheduled as follows:
$5.85 - Summer of 2007
$6.55 - Summer of 2008
$7.25 - Summer of 2009
